A Fresh Chapter: Q&A with Rose Sawyer

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to embark on the exhilarating journey of becoming an author? In the vast tapestry of literature, every new author brings a unique thread, weaving their own story into the fabric of storytelling. Today, I invite you to the next chapter of my journey as I muster the courage to step back into writing after five years. 

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rose Sawyer (she/fae) and I’m about to be your book buddy! I sincerely hate writing about myself, so please enjoy this little Q&A I put together so we can get to know each other better!

Q: What inspired you to begin your journey as a writer? Was there a specific moment or experience that sparked your interest?

A: My soul-deep love for the craft was encouraged, in great part, by my lifelong tutor (Love you Mrs. B!) who saw me devouring every reading and writing assignment placed in front of me with ease. As I jumped ahead grade after grade, she assigned me extra work to keep my mind stimulated and growing. Unlike most kids, I was thrilled by these assignments. 

I’ve often said it was one of these assignments that first gave me the itch to be an author. I’d been assigned a one-page writing assignment requiring me to use at least one adjective in every sentence. I’ve always loved a challenge and this was no different. Before I knew it I was nose-deep in a fantasy story about a dog who was bringing colour back to a gray little village in a valley. It was the first time the pen took a life of it’s own.

Over time, I inhaled every book I could get my chubby little hands on. I was introduced to fanfiction and found my writing community there. I realized the stories I told in my mind were difficult to find on paper. As the indomitable Toni Morrison said, “If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”

Q: Are there any authors or books that have influenced your writing style or inspired you as you started out?

A: Without a doubt, J.R.R. Tolkien is responsible for my love of world-building. The depth and thoroughness with which he brings his worlds and languages to life is inspiring, to say the least. For romance, I grew up stealing my sister’s Carly Phillips, Julie Garwood, and Lisa Kleypas novels from her room (I gave most of them back, sorry M.). Today, there are so many inspiring authors it’s hard to name them all.

Q: How did you find the courage to share your writing with others and pursue publication?

A: Sharing my writing was and continues to be one of the most terrifying things I challenge myself to do. It’s one of the reasons I take comfort in the relative anonymity of being an author who is getting started even though I look forward to building a platform.

Q: How do you handle self-doubt and criticism as a new author? Do you have any strategies for staying motivated and confident in your work?

A: Getting out of my head has always been a struggle and it’s no different with writing. It’s difficult to combat the imposter syndrome, rejection sensitivity, and anxiety that so often come with putting your heart on paper and handing it to strangers. It can impact my motivation and confidence, for sure.

I’ve found accommodating yourself is crucial in life and writing. Do the little ways to make things to make it easier. Another thing that helps is taking time to be gentle with yourself and practice self care. I know, eye roll, right? But we’ve found that taking breaks and embracing hobbies helps our creativity and productivity. Most importantly, remembering that my perspective is 100% unique and no one else can write the story I’m writing is a game changer and important for all writers to keep in mind.

Q: Can you tell us about your debut book and what readers can expect from it?

A: OK, technically, this isn’t my debut book. I’ve had three published before but they’re all out of print and show the social influences and pressures I was experiencing as a middle schooler/high schooler. So, I’ve decided they deserve a little love and a facelift. 

The first book I’m hoping to bring back to life is a billionaire/age gap contemporary romance with a hint of darkness and a steaming helping of spice. Readers can expect a little found family, friends to lovers, and one of my favorite characters.

Q: Lastly, can you give us a glimpse into your future plans as an author? Are there any upcoming projects or goals that you’re excited about?

A: I have too many projects. There’s a list of 12+ manuscripts and outlines waiting for their turn and I’m desperate to get to all of them. I fully planning on diving fantasy headfirst. Romantasy is my most read genre and I’m eager to put my own spin on it. But first, I want to rework my previously published novels and give them new life, so stay tuned for that!
